Hi everyone,
Three weeks ago I began volunteering at St. Joe's in their after school program. This happens on Thursdays in the Library for any student that wants some one-on-one tutoring in any subject. Although I'm Science, I have been mostly helping with Math! There is one student who has come regularly, as she struggles with her course content. I'm trying to be a patient, empathetic, motivating, spirit to help her believe in herself.

My social action project is collecting Canadian Tire Money. I'm going to work with the student council members at my school and send home a letter to all the parents in the school about sending in any Canadian Tire money they have around. We are going to take all the money and put it towards some items needed by a charity (possibly a family in need or a shelter). These items might include blankets, heaters, etc.

This summer, myself and 9 other people began a cultural club for the city of Barrie. It is called "The Italian Cultural Club of Barrie and Area". We decided to start up a club that would bring people from the community together.The goal of this club is topreserve the culture and traditions of the Italian community and to encourage residents to become actively involved in carrying forward the Italian heritage.Our goal is to promote the Italian heritage to other people.Our mission will be supported by contributions by local businesses, community members and government subsidies. The Italian Cultural Club of Barrie will host yearly events as well as social activities in hopes of creating an atmosphere of fellowship amongst its members and guests. Our first celebration will be taking place on November 22nd, 2008 at the Army Navy and Airforce Club. (Updated: October 25th)

Hi everybody, This weekend, we will be hosting our first cultural get together for the Italian Cultural Club of Barrie. This event is now sold out and people are getting excited. We have coordinated this party for several months now and can't wait to see how everything is going to pan out. We will be planning another event after this party which will be taking place sometime in July. I will submit another update after the party. (updated: November 16th)

The Italian Cultural Club Party was a success. Everybody had a wonderful time. There were 3 keynote speakers at the party (Mayor Dave Aspden, Eileen Carroll, MPP and Patrick Brown MP). It was nice to see the Italian community of Barrie come together and celebrate their culture. Through this social action project, I learned that I am called to be a collaborator both as a teacher and a citizen of Barrie. I learned the importance of celebrating all cultures as a way of reinforcing inclusion. It is important to keep our culture close at heart and to pass it down to younger generations of people. We should adopt the same attitude with our Catholic faith.
Recently, I was hired as LTO! Which is great news, but it means the volunteer work will end at St. Joe's as I can't get there in time. I have asked around to find out if I can be involved in the new school. Melanie

Right now we are busy with Christmas Cheer and several other projects. In the new year, we will begin collecting the Canadian Tire money to spend on items needed by local charities. Currently I am in the process of deciding which charity will benefit most from the donations.

I just got home from another part of my social action project and thought that I would do an update. My social action project with the Canadian Tire money is going to be done mainly after Christmas so I wanted to do a couple other things as well. Tonight my school hosted Spaghetti with Santa with the Knights of Columbus. The students and their parents enjoyed a meal and dessert and also were able to get their picture taken with Santa (an inexpensive way to have a photo with Santa taken). I served cake for several hours and then helped clean up and move all the furinture back to its proper place. It was a very successful event!
The other part of my before Christmas Social Action project, is doing the Children's Liturgy at St. John Vianney. I really enjoy doing the Children's Liturgies! Cristina Crittenden
Christmas Cheer continues at school. I'm really struggling with my students; perhaps I chose the wrong class to do this with.
Students in the whole school were involved in a clothing drive, and for the last week, there will be food drive.
The extra help day was moved to Wednesdays. I'm disappointed that more teachers are not involved, but there are so many activities happening at this time of year.
I think that the Social Action project was a great oppertunity to get out in the community and help out. I met many people and had some wonderfully rewarding experiences. I don't know if this answers the question "Who do you say that I am".

I have been thinking about the question "Who do you say that I am" and I think that through the Social Action Project I learned that it is important to help out in any way that you can. Even small things can make a huge difference in peoples' lives. I think that it is important to spread the message of love and that is what I felt through the course. Any other ideas?

I had another thought after thinking about the question for a few more days. I think that we are role models for our students and if we set the example high by always showing our students compassion, love, and understanding that this is what our students learn to become. I've already seen some of this from my students. Their small acts of kindness towards one another and to others makes a huge difference!

Is he teacher?
Is he caregiver?
Is he humanitarian?
Is he crusader of social justice?
Is he promoter of community?
Is he King of Hope?
In this Advent season, he is all of these, and more.
